Mountain Elgon National Park:

Mountain Elgon is  a 4,321m high extinct Volcano which in prehistoric times stood taller than  Kilimanjaro today. Although the mountain straddles the Kenya boarder, its loftiest peak, wagagai, lies within Uganda side. Elgon is an Important watershed, and its slopes support a rich variety of altitudinal   vegetation zones ranging from montane forest to high open moorland studded with the other-worldly giant lobelia and groundsel plants.                

Spectacular scenery is the main attraction for hikers on this oft-neglected and relatively undemanding mountain, but there is also a variety of forest monkeys and small antelopes, along with elephants and buffalos. A Checklist topping 300 species of birds includes many bird species not recorded elsewhere in Uganda. Other  attractions include the ancient Cave paintings close to the trailhead at Budadiri, and spectacular caves and hot  springs within the crater.

Mountaineering:

At Mount Elgon National Park, mountaineering can be experienced on this volcanic mountain which is also the 4th highest mountain in East Africa, located in the eastern part of  Uganda on the border with Kenya. The park boundaries contain 1147 Sq. km of    mountain.Most of this area is covered with typical afro-montane vegetation, complete with   giant groundsels and bamboo forest. Many travelers find Mt. Elgon an exciting alternative to   some of the more strenuous climbs in East Africa. It has many of the same attractions, with milder climate and lower elevation. Climbing the peaks requires no special equipment or   technical climbing experience. It is possible to summit the mountain in as little as three days,   but slightly longer visit will permit a more thorough exploration of all Mt. Elgon has to offer . Day walks from Budadiri or within the Mountain Elgon Forest Exploration Center; Welworth visiting is the famous sipi falls.
