See Big 5 in Uganda | Full Safari Guide + Real Visitor Experience

See Africa’s Big 5 in Uganda ! Let’s look at where you have to go and tag along for an actual 9 day safari in Uganda where our Czech visitors ticked off the Big 5.

Can You Really See Africa’s Big 5 in Uganda? Yes – And Here’s How

Seeing the Big 5—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—is a safari dream. Uganda is one of the few countries where you can still tick off all five in the wild. This guide shows you exactly how to see Big 5 in Uganda with practical travel tips and a real-life example from a 9-day safari with our visitors from the Czech Republic.

What Does “Big 5” Mean?

Originally a trophy hunter’s term, the Big 5 includes the five animals considered most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today, these majestic creatures are cherished for their beauty and protected by conservation efforts. Uganda offers a unique, crowd-free way to see them in their natural habitats.

Where to See Big 5 in Uganda

To see the Big 5 in Uganda, you need to plan a safari that includes both Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and at least one of the country’s savanna national parks. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can trek rhinos on foot—an unforgettable experience that supports important conservation work. For the remaining four members of the Big 5—elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard—you’ll want to visit one or more of Uganda’s savanna parks.

If you’re short on time, it’s possible to see the Big 5 during a compact 3-day safari by combining Murchison Falls National Park with a stop at Ziwa. This combo gives you a solid chance at ticking off all five species. However, for travelers who want to increase their odds of quality sightings and enjoy the full variety Uganda offers, it’s worth extending your itinerary to include more parks.

In addition to Murchison Falls, Uganda is home to three other savanna parks that are Big 5 hotspots: Queen Elizabeth National Park—famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector and boat cruises along the Kazinga Channel; Kidepo Valley National Park—one of Africa’s most remote and pristine wilderness areas; and Lake Mburo National Park—a smaller park that still offers chances to spot leopards and buffalo. Each park brings something unique to your journey and boosts your chances to successfully see Big 5 in Uganda.

Safari Tag along: Seeing the Big 5 in Uganda

Join us as we tag along on a real-life safari adventure! Dona and our guests from the Czech Republic set out on a 9-day Uganda safari—and their goal? To see the Big 5 in Uganda. Along the way, they encountered not only the famous Big 5 animals but also the warmth of Ugandan hospitality, scenic landscapes, and unforgettable moments that only a safari in the Pearl of Africa can offer.

Rhino

The first of these amazing animals to be ticked off was the rhino. As they were heading northwards towards Murchison Falls National Park they made a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Uganda’s rhinos were hunted to extinction but thanks to the conservation project going on at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary they are once again present in the Pearl of Africa. The sanctuary works to increase its numbers of rhinos and targets to reintroduce rhinos in the wild of Uganda’s National Parks.

Our visitors went for a walk with a specialized guide to see these fascinating animals. And yes it is safe to trek the rhinos on foot since their sight is so bad.

Leopard

During their safari Dona and his team had the chance to see leopard in two National Parks. They first visited Murchison Falls National Park where they had a nice sighting of a leopard in a tree. Continuing on they saw a second leopard in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Elephant

Dona’s team sighted the elephant for the first time in Murchison Falls National Park. This big 5 member is actually the worlds largest land living mammal.

Buffalo

The safari passed through Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park where buffaloes where sighted. Seeing a heard of buffaloes grazing is an impressive sight. Or to see the joy they get from enjoying to cool of in mud or water.

Lion

Our Czech visitors had their top lion sightings in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here they first enjoyed seeing lions just on the road as they did their game-drive in the main part of the park. When they then continued south to the Ishasha sector of the park they sighted the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. In this part of Queen Elizabeth National Park the lions have the habit of regularly climbing the trees. Which offers visitors the peculiar sight of a big cat lazily resting on the branch of a fig tree.
