Culture safari in Eastern Uganda | See how it is

Uganda culture safari with Karamojong

Lets tag along to see how it is to be on a culture safari in Eastern Uganda. Awhile ago a Swedish couple who traveled with us a few years ago contacted us and wished to return to Uganda. Their last time in Uganda they did a safari in western Uganda with gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. So now we suggested that they explore Eastern and Northern Uganda.

We sent them our itinerary for a 8 days Uganda culture and wildlife safari. This safari takes the Eastern route up towards Kidepo Valley National Park. Along the way you experience the source of the Nile in Jinja. Continue on for scenic waterfalls and a coffee experience with the Sebei tribes in Sipi Falls. Then the journey goes in remote areas with scenic nature and the Karamojong peoples interesting culture. In Kidepo Valley National Park the highlight is game-drives for wildlife before heading southwards. The journey south goes via Murchison Falls National Park. Then it finishes with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (so you have the chance to tick off “the Big 5”).

The couple from Sweden wished to add in some more adventure in the itinerary. Since we are happy to tailor-make an itinerary that fits you we were happy to come with suggestions. In the end three more activities were added to their itinerary. They added in rafting on the Nile in Jinja, a day hike on Mount Moroto and a walking safari in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Let’s dive into pictures from their journey northwards through Eastern Uganda. Where the focus really is on Ugandan culture and scenic nature.

Coffee experience during Culture safari in Eastern Uganda

The tribe that lives in the area of the scenic Sipi Falls is called Sebei and they grow coffee on the foothills of mount Elgon. Our visitors joined a community walk to learn how they grow and process their coffee. During this experience they got hands on in roasting the beans over the fire and grinding them into powder. At the end they could finally taste a cup of coffee that they had taken part in processing the beans for.

In the pictures below you can see a bit of their experience during the beautiful water falls walk in Sipi Falls.

Karamojong cultural visit

Continuing northwards on the culture safari in Eastern Uganda the highlight along the way was a stop in a remote Karamojong village. Here our visitors could see how the Karamojong people live as cattle herders, take part in their cultural dance and even see how they in a traditional way prepare and share blod and milk from a cow. A truly special experience for our visitors!

When they had ticked off the highlights on the culture safari in Eastern Uganda they continued on for a day hike on Mount Moroto before reaching the untouched wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park.
