Meeting the giraffes of Lake Mburo national park

On a weekend safari our safari team were lucky to get a close-up meeting with the giraffes of Lake Mburo national park. This park is known for its zebras but as an addition to the abundance of antelopes and zebras a group of giraffes were introduced to the park in July l2015.  Since most of the visitors on the safari hadn’t seen giraffes in the wild an aim of the game-drive was to see them.

The giraffes where actually sighted for the first time already on the first day as they were driving up to the lodge. But the giraffes were far away and binoculars were needed to see them well. During the afternoon game-drive later on the day the giraffes of Lake Mburo were seen again a bit closer this time. The visitors were happy to have seen them and assumed that was it.

Little did they know that they would get another sighting. To their great surprise the giraffes were seen again as they were driving out of the park next morning. The giraffes were standing by the roadside and stayed to be studied for a long time. A highlight of the safari!

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is a nice stop during a Uganda safari. Here you head out for game-drives to see zebras, giraffes, impalas, elands and possibly a leopard. This park is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks and home to 68 different species of mammals. Leopards, hyena and jackals are the predators that are present. Since there are no elephants in the National Park it has  bushier landscape than Uganda’s other savannah National Parks.

The bird population includes 315 species of birds including the rare Shoebill stork, papyrus yellow warbler and African fin foot.

After a move by Uganda Wildlife Authority in July 2015 to ensure the survival of the endangered Rotchild’s Giraffe a number of these magnificent animals can as well be found in the park.

Come for a tailor-made Uganda safari with us.
