Over the weekend we made a visit to Mpanga forest for what turned out to be a Mpanga forest butterfly walk. This is a forest rich in birds, butterflies and beautiful nature within easy access from Kampala. After checking-in to a cottage at the Mpanga forest ecotourism site we headed into the forest for a first walk.
Without planning it the focus of this walk became butterflies. Uganda has a bit over 1200 different butterflies, of which 31 are endemic. During our Mpanga forest butterfly walk we managed to see around 20 different ones and tried to catch them on camera to share with you.
For anyone spending some time in Kampala a trip to Mpanga forest makes for a nice weekend getaway or it can be incorporated in a longer safari at the start or end. The forest is protected as a reserve and an ecotourism site has been set up by the edge of it. Since it is only around 40 km from Kampala along the way to Masaka it easy to access. Head for a Mpanga forest butterfly walk during your safair if you have a special interest in butterflies.
