During his last safari Tony and his team of birders were lucky enough to see the very sought after Rhinoceros viper in Mgahinga gorilla national park. They were out in the forest birding and just by the path they were walking on they sighted the Rhinoceros viper. It is really a beautiful sight and since is normally not an aggressive snake it was not a dangerous situation even if it is a venomous snake. The snake became a highlight during the walk in Mgahinga together with the colourful Rwenzori turaco.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
In the far south of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a gem waiting to be discovered. Though the smallest of Uganda’s national parks, covering just 33.7 square kilometers, its a park that can offer a lot. Here you can trek primates, go for a Batwa experience or hike to the peaks of impressive volcanoes.
As you approach, the views of the three majestic volcanoes—Mt. Muhavura (4,127 meters), Mt. Sabinyo (3,645 meters), and Mt. Gahinga (3,474 meters)—command the landscape, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure. You can go on day hikes to explore these majestic volcanoes. A hike here lets you take in the changing nature and scenic views.
The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla group, the only habituated gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Here you can go for Mountain Gorilla trekking which is truly an adventure of a lifetime. You can as well trek golden monkey here, so truly a park rich in primate adventures. Besides the primate experience you can visit the Batwa community to learn how these ingenious community used to live in the forests of Mganinga Gorilla National Park.
