Earlier this month Tony took a couple from Spain for their honeymoon. The safari was focused on hiking and included chimps & gorilla trekking as well as a three days hike in the Rwenzori mountains.
After hiking in the Rwenzori mountains they stopped in a village close to the mountains for a village visit. We try to include some meetings with people and the culture along the way so you get an idea of how life can be like here. In this case the guides taking the couple for the hike in the Rwenzori mountains worked as at a school when not up in the mountains so they visited his school. It became a nice experience meeting the children and seeing a school in a very remote area by including a school and village visit.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is found along Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon”, these mountains boast Africa’s highest range, with the highest peak reaching 5,102 meters. In Africa the Rwenzoris are only surpassed in elevation by the towering volcanoes of Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro. Visible from miles away, the glacial peaks captivate all who see them. For adventurous trekkers, the slopes above 1,600 meters present some of the most challenging and rewarding trekking experiences in Africa.
For the once not aiming for the peak it is possible to select from a day hike or a few days up in the mountains. When around the foothills of the mountain it is possible to do a school and village visit like these visitors.
Hikes & primates safari
For a similar itinerary like the one these visitors did you can take a look at our 14-days hikes and primates tour. This safari lets you trek chimpanzees as well as Mountain Gorillas combined with a trek in Rwenzori mountains and hike on a volcano in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Along the way you are taken on a journey through Uganda’s fascinating and changing landscape. And off course meetings with the friendly people of the Pearl of Africa. Stops in villages, markets or tea plantations gives you an insight into life in Uganda’s countryside.
