Visiting beekeepers in Uganda

Some of our recent visitors were beekeepers and interested in learning something about Ugandan beekeeping and Ugandan honey. While on the way to Queen Elizabeth National Park our visitors made a stop by Bunyangabu Beekeepers Cooperative (BBC). To see what the beekeeping cooperative does and learn a bit about beekeeping in Uganda. BBC is located by the road between Fort Portal and Kasese. And it makes for an interesting community tourism stop along the way for the bee interested. The beekeepers cooperative produces honey and educates beekeepers from the community to understand the benefits of bees and improve their skills. Our visitors  shown the beehives and told about the process of making honey. Finishing off the visit was a look in the shop the cooperative runs. Where they could buy beeswax candles made by BBC and of course the Ugandan honey.

At BBC they use the Kenyan top bar hives (KTB hives) and the cooperative builds hives. To give out to the community to empower people through beekeeping. The KTB hives affordable compared to Langstroth and traditional hives which makes them a good option for the cooperative. At the same time the KTB hives known for still giving good quantities of honey as well as beeswax. The honey of BBC is sold as both liquid honey and crystallized honey (the hard white honey).
